The Mid-Atlantic Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (DC, DE, MD, PA, and WV) in partnership with FEMA Region III invite you to join us for our annual conference. Our theme is:
Beyond Band-Aids: Dismantling Systemic Inequities that Fuel Disaster Vulnerability
As disaster response agencies, we often respond to the most vulnerable, marginalized, and under-resourced communities affected by disasters. Systemic inequalities already exist for these populations well before a disaster strikes, and they are exacerbated by the disaster. We find ourselves simultaneously “within” and “outside” of these systems. The conference will explore how we strategize, work intentionally, and become aware of our biases in responding from within these positions to bring equitable recovery for everyone.
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Cassandra Davis, Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Policy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her most recent projects focus on addressing systemic racism and building trust and community between emergency management and socially marginalized populations disrupted by consecutive natural disasters.
